Round 9

The winner of the 2003 Box Hill Open is 7th seed Tuan Le 8/9.  Well done Tuan.  Full details of prizes on a separate notice on the board.

Remarkably, wins by players with the black pieces dominated for the second round in a row 19 to 10 (this week).  Is it so hard to play white?

Upsets were few and far between this week on the top boards.  Devrim van Dijk took a full point from Rad Chmiel; John Butler showed some old form against Shane Lawson; Sam Elbrish had a great win over Rowan Fell; Rengan Vijayakumar showed he is dangerous by defeating Grayson O’Connor; and Kingsley Feng was stunned by Paul Qian.

There are flyers on the front desk for the next Friday Swiss event, the Tuesday Swiss event (not too late to join), the next Sunday Allegro event, as well as draft calendars for next year.

ACF Bulletin #242 came out this week; in fact it is a weekly bulletin produced by the Australian Chess Federation.  You can link to the ACF web-site from our Box Hill web-site and organise your own free copy of this national bulletin.  See Trevor Stanning if you have any difficulty.  The Bulletin contained highly interesting information about a $7000 development fund for juniors, next year.

OUR club web-site has had difficulties this week.  When this occurs the pairings are alternately posted at the ACF Bulletin Board.  Choose the link from http://www.auschess.org.au

Round 8

The winner of the 2003 Box Hill Open is clear with a round to go.  The 7th seed, Tuan Le, has achieved 7.5/8 to take an unassailable lead.  Well done Tuan.

Currently in second position are Milenko Lojanica and Ascaro Pecori, on 6/8.

Remarkably in round eight on the first 17 boards, there was only one win by the player with the white pieces (by Tuan Le).  A real statistical oddity.  We should note the performance of Anthony Miller’s win against Peter Frost, and Reubban Muthusamy’s win against Edward Rice.  A nice draw by Paul Qian v Rowan Fell shows that an absence from play can be harmful to ratings.

Sean Devoy’s best win at the Club came against Rocheleh Ziffer.

ACF Bulletin #240 came out this week; in fact it is a weekly bulletin produced by the Australian Chess Federation.  You can link to the ACF web-site from our Box Hill web-site and organise your own free copy of this national bulletin.  See Trevor Stanning if you have any difficulty.

Round 7

The upsets continue.

The most upset were our organisers last Friday as they lost the pairings sheet that was on the notice-board and hence they lost all the results of games.  Many were recoverable because players had taken the time to put their completed score-sheet in the box... thank you to those people.  In other cases, neither player followed the rules and got his opponent to sign the scoresheet and submit the sheet to the tournament organiser.  We can do better on this.

Now to the chess > Tuan Le continued on his giant-killing ways and beat Denis Bourmistrov, Norm Wilson excelled himself with a good win over Narelle Szuveges, and Andrew Whittick took many rating points from Rowan Fell, as did Paul Qian over Arthur Goudy.

Follow the progress of all Australian juniors (19 players), in Greece at the World Junior, by reading the ACF Bulletin Board.  See Trevor Stanning if you need directions.

Round 6

The top scorer gets beaten!  The lower rated Tuan Le scored a fine win over previously unbeaten Milenko Lojanica to produce an interesting last few rounds for our Open event.  Richard Martin’s super run in division B ground to a halt against the solid Rad Chmiel.  Reubban Muthusamy had an excellent draw against Peter Frost... that will cost some rating points Peter.  And again Dimitri Tsirongas got caught out by a dangerous points-seeking junior, Devrim van Dijk this time.  Bruce Simpson played a couldabeen game against Keith Jenkins, but ended up ruing.

Elena Galibovitch continued some good form to defeat Peter Braham.  Upset of the round was Jerome Lugo’s win over Derek Yu; I have warned everyone before... this micro-junior is very dangerous.  But Sally Yu struck back for the Yu’s with a nice draw against Vladimir Zacharczenko.

Welcome back to Gerrit Hartland from his trip overseas.

By the way, did you know that the winner of the Whitehorse Rapid play event was IM Peter Froehlich, who is a club member.

And the winner of the Victorian Championship is another Club member, GM Darryl Johansen.

Well done guys.

Round 5

A late adjustment to the pairings was necessary to accommodate a new entrant to the tournament.  Play got underway at the scheduled time of 7:45pm.

Some new juniors still play these games too fast and need to be reminded to slow down.

Two of our juniors are about to leave to play in the 2003 World Youth Championships as part of a contingent of 39 from Australia.  Sam Chow and Michelle Lee were each presented with a cheque of the standard BHCC donation to their fund-raising.  Michelle was doubly lucky later in the evening when our President, Howard Liston, also donated an en prise bishop to Michelle when he was in a winning position.  Very generous Howard.

Milenko Lojanica maintained his unbeaten run with a win over Denis Bourmistrov on the top board.

Norm Wilson achieved a good draw from Geoff Hilliard as did Farn-Ling Khung against John Butler.

But the biggest upset was Richard Martin’s win over Edward Rice; Richard told me before the game that he felt he was a chance.  Mark McKenzie had a good win against Andrew Whittick.  Samuel Fell returned some rating points to the pool as he found Vanja Rozenblat too well prepared.

Two games are postponed to next Tuesday; Flude v Pecori, and Tuan Le v Narelle Szuveges.

The leader in A division is Milenko Lojanica on 5/5, and in B Division Richard Martin is on 4.5/5.

Round 4

We started the evening sans Gerrit Hartland (who is overseas), and Phillip O’Connor (who is interstate), but looked after by arbiter Frank Meerbach.  The 5th seed had called in sick on Thursday and requested to be withdrawn from the 4th round.  This was approved and caused a slight recast of the pairings that had been posted on the ACF Bulletin Board.

Thank you to the crew who pitched in to help with the set-up of the hall in the absence of our normal officials.  In particular Anton Nincevic, John Butler, Marieke van Dijk and Bruce Simpson’s contributions were appreciated, amongst others; thank you all.

The board two game had been played on the previous Tuesday, but the manager-of-the-night, me, did not notice until games started at 7:45pm; there was an obvious lack of players right next door to the premium game for the evening.  Two late arrivals in B division were diverted to play on board two and proceeded to play at a quality above themselves until a surprise mate on h7 brought Sean Devoy back to earth.

On board seven Michelle Lee seemed to be distracted in her game against Peter Frost.  Peter got a threatening pawn to d6 but subsequently lost.  I for one will be looking at the game when posted on our web-site to see how Michelle won this one.

John Nemeth quickly accounted for David Flude and the analysis afterwards took longer than the game.  The first minor upset occurred as Narelle Szuveges took a full point from Nur Yachou after Nur seemd to be dominating the position without an actual material advantage.  Geoff Hilliard talked Shane Lawson out of a full point, and Keith Jenkins found Reubban Muthusamy to be a major threat to Keith’s healthy rating.  George Umber won a pawn from Kingsley Feng, but lacked wherewithall to take the full point.  Alan Elliott found that faulty petrol gauges, new cars, and the Freeway are one combination that can make you late; result, LOF.

Richard Martin took maximum rating points from Grayson O’Connor and Rob McCulloch continued his good run; this time against Peter Braham.  Another maximum ratings points transfer occurred as Farn-Ling Khung went 1-0 against Fred Tischman, as did Melford Long against Vladimir Zacharczenko.  New junior Andrew Snooks snook up to win over Anthony Petrou.

Results from the top 10 boards were

A Pecori 0-1 M Lojanica
Z Lojanica 0-1 Tuan Le
D Bourmistrov 1-0 M Rothlisberger
D Flude 0-1 J Nemeth
M Raine 1-0 D van Dijk
S Sharman 0-1 D Dragicevic
P Frost 0-1 M Lee
N Szuveges 1-0 N Yachou
H Liston 1-0 R Exner
S Lawson 0-1 G Hilliard

After four rounds in A division the leader is M Lojanica 4/4 from Tuan Le and Denis Bourmistrov on 3.5/4. In B Division, R Muthusamy leads with 4/4 from J Wan, R Martin, and R McCulloch on 3.5/4.

Round 3

The news that one of our Club members had just won the 2003 Australian Championship created a lot of interest; a more detail notice was posted elsewhere on the board.  We congratulate Darryl Johansen on a fine win over Nick Speck.

Back to round three of the 2003 Box Hill Chess Club Open and games got underway relatively smoothly.  Thank you to all whom gave adequate notice of the need for a postponement.

Another feature of interest for us to watch on Friday 26/9 was a game between Eddi Levi and Sam Chow from the 2003 Victorian Championship.  Tuesday players at the Club are well accustomed to sharing the venue with Vic Championship players; and it was good to see one of these games on a Friday evening.

The first big upset to be noticed was David Flude’s fine win over Mehmedalija Dizdarevic.  Newcomer Dimitri Tsirongas again shed a few rating points when he was held to a draw by Grayson O’Connor.  Newcomers are welcome at Box Hill.  (We need the rating points pool to be replenished).  Howard Liston also had to share points with junior Rukman Vijayakumar.

Edward Rice found that although he achieved many scalps as a junior himself there are even younger juniors who have to be watched; Kingsley Feng v Edward Rice .5-.5. Also Kohei Endo found exactly the same lesson when he had to share with Udit Thakur.

Arthur Goudy rarely plays on Friday; but it was a Tuesday player who caused the upset McCulloch-Goudy 1-0.  Finally, mark this one down in your ‘to watch’ books; Jerome Lugo (yes Jerome, not Ruperto) beat Shuyu Wang.  Be very careful against this micro-junior.

And Samuel Fell got back on the winners board.  Well done Samuel.

Round 2

The 2003 Box Hill Chess Club Open field has increased to 81 players with some late entrants being attracted by the prize-money on offer (see Prizes notice elsewhere on this board).

Games got underway at the scheduled time of 7:45pm.  A couple of no-shows by players were disappointing for their scheduled opponents.  A reminder to call the Club mobile at least 24 hours before Friday if you cannot play the next round game.

A welcome visitor to the Club was Gary Lycett.  Gary is the editor of a Chess Victoria newsletter that is issued electronically every week.  If you want to stay abreast of Victorian events at other clubs you should register to receive this free newsletter.

Did you know that our Club is open on Tuesday nights?  As well as a Box Hill Swiss tournament there are also rounds of the Victorian championship.  Come along and see Grandmasters and International masters playing important games, starting at 7:30pm each Tuesday.

Now to the chess; interesting games included Bourmistrov drawing with Flude in a game where white’s first two moves were Nf3 and b3; was Denis spooked by Flude’s legendary opening preparation?  Marcus Raine looked worse in the opening against Michelle Lee and the spectator-buzzards circled looking for roadkill; but Marcus showed a cool head and eventually 1-0.  Peter Frost failed to read the warning in Bulletin #1 and fell victim to Devrim van Dijk.  Rowan Fell may have been studying during his long absence; the result against Dimitri Tsirongas 1-0.

James Wan found unrated newcomer Rob McCulloch hard to match .5-.5.  And finally, Samuel Fell has distinguished himself over the past two weeks; he has lost to the youngest girl player in the field and lost to the oldest player (Robert Chan) in the field.  Good luck next week Samuel.

Round 1

Seventy-six players entered for the 2003 Box Hill Chess Club OPEN.

The first problem for the evening was the demise of the computer that records entries and makes the pairings.  Grrr.

A quick switch was made to a stand-by laptop and games eventually got underway.

An hour into the evening with quietness at levels to please most arbiters and players, we were invaded by a bus-load of 40 people wearing funny fake noses and some with bright wigs.  Rod Quantock is a well-known Melbourne comedian who conducts ‘tours’ to unexpected venues, unannounced and in some cases unwelcome.  As you might expect, the quiet conditions evaporated in an instance as the man with an imitation chook tied to his shepherds crook proceeded to arrange games with the bemused juniors who had finished their games early.

And then, 15 minutes later, they were gone.

On reflection our Committee men judged the disturbance to be less than the annual Gregorian chants at the Greek church on the opposite corner.  We could do without either.

The field swelled to 80 entrants with some late-comers playing their games on Tuesday 16/9.  This meant that the normal round one pairings do not exactly match the seedings.

However, we were treated to the usual sprinkling of round one surprise results which included a fine win by Peter Schultzer over John Nemeth, Norm Wilson’s draw against Marcel Rothlisberger, Devrim Vabn Dijk’s win over Narelle Szuveges, Artem Nikolayevsky’s draw against Geoff Cook, Rukman Vijayakumar’s win over Dimitri Tsirongas, Vanja Rozenblat’s win over Rocheleh Ziffer, Sally Yu accounted for Samuel Fell, Rob McCulloch’s win against Casey Hickman.
