2008 Autumn Cup round 3 completed
The tournament that starts in summer but finishes in autumn

Round 3 was marred by no less than 3 [!] forfeits. [Anurag continued to be ill, Elliott missed out due to an accident on the way to the game and Victor Kildisas was a no show]. David Creedon was impressive in his win against the much higher rated Zeljko Podvorac and Stephanie’s mum was vey pleased with her daughter’s draw against the highly regarded David Schneider. In round 4 Chris Wallis will continue on top board. Victor Kildisas has been withdrawn. The clash Yu v Yu is unfortunate but better now than later

Tuesday New season Swiss

Club closed nights: February 12, March 11

The round 3 broadcast game between Lawson and Bergmanis provided us with yet another interesting game. The likely pairing for for the broadcast game next Tuesday will be Bergmanis v Flude. Will David trot out an innovation? Due to the continuing absence of Victor Kildisas we finally had an even number. Round 3 crossable set out below

Issue 2008.07 – February 21

March Queens and Rookies Cup.

Sponsored by Zed chess: www.zedchess.com.au

Contact coach George Zaprudsky

The March tournament on March 16 1s actually the third Sunday of the month as the second Sunday is the labour day weekend when a lot of our members expect to play in the Begonia festival tournament in Ballarat.

2008 Autumn Cup round 2 completed
The tournament that starts in summer but finishes in autumn

The push for rating recognition by our young players continued in round 2 with Michael Chan [remember his picket fence score in the open last year?] and Isaac Ng [always dangerous] giving 400 rating points away and winning. Round 3 preliminary draw with the acceleration removed is now available on the website http://www.boxhillchess.org.au

Due to a nasty ear infection which left him partially deaf [well deafer than usual] the arbiter missed a mobile phone transgression. The lucky escapee was newcomer Ronnie Ducusin. The uneven number of players continues to bug the making of the draw. We need a couple of low rated players to be included in the field willing to take a place on the night if a vacancy occurs. Is there anyone out there?

08 Ergas training camp at Canterbury Junior Chess

Applications for the training camp have now closed and Kerry will be able to announce the selected field shortly.

Tuesday New season Swiss

The round 2 broadcast game between Bergmanis an Kildisas turned out to be a beauty with Olgerts offering a pawn in the rarely seen Italian gambit putting Victor under constant pressure A few more young players entered but Anurag and Ian were missing, What happened

Issue 2008.06 – February 14

February Queens and Rookies Cup.

sponsored by Zed chess: www.zedchess.com.au

Contact coach George Zaprudsky

We had 46 entrants in the February Rookies and Queens Cup last Sunday. This was a good turn-out given the competition from Chinese New Year festivities.

Top seed was Carl Gorka who played in the recent Victorian Championship; welcome to Carl and he gave good competition to all the strong entrants.

Cedric Antolis continued his super form from 2007 and was winner of the Rookies section by a clear point.

Seven female players was a pleasing aspect and congratulations to Adeline Antolis and Janaki Narenthran for winning the Queens section.

Full results and section winners can be viewed on our web-site: http://www.boxhillchess.org.au

A call for volunteers to assist in running this boisterous event saw Laurie Dalton put his hand up and we hope he enjoyed the experience of being stretched. Thanks Laurie.

Next tournament March 16

2008 Autumn Cup round 1 completed
The tournament that starts in summer but finishes in autumn

After a very slow early bird entry a last minute burst of strong and not so strong players ensured a quality field. A big bonus for the club was the return FM Geoff Saw [after a long absence] Vanja Rozenblat, Devrim Van Dijk, and Ruebban Muthusamy after study absence. One of the attractions this year is the live broadcast of board one games via our newly acquired DGT board. The broadcasted game from round one was a cracker in which the pupil defeated the master. IM Leonid Sandler commented later that it made him feel better as he was now not the only master to lose to a BHCC junior.

This Friday we will see the replay of Dalton v Wallis [a replay from the Australian Junior and the Canterbury Summer Swiss]

The preliminary draw for round two is now available on our web site http://www.boxhillchess.org.au

08 Ergas training camp at Canterbury Junior Chess

The 2008 Ergas national junior training camp will be held at our club from Monday July 7 to Sunday July 13. Note that expressions of interest from junior players are now being sought. And the closing date has been extended to 9th February. In order to be considered for Ergas you have to have played in either the 2008 Australian Juniors or 2007/8 Aus Champs and supporting events. If you think you qualify contact Kerry Lyall CV secretary
