08 Australian Junior
As
reported in our last bulletin a group of our players competed in the Australian
Junior Championships. Feedback that I am receiving indicates that this was a
very well organised and administered tournament. In particular the internet
website was excellent providing round by round draws and results as well as
games in a format so that they can be played through on the internet.
UNDER 18 OPEN.
Our players all acquitted themselves well in what was a very strong
tournament. Brief notes follow.
Chris
Wallis [BHCC club champion 07 Vic Junior Champion]
8
points final position 4-5 overall
Chris
led the tournament until losing to the eventual winner Junta Ikeda. This was a
very difficult long game and Chris lost the following game as well but finished
the tournament strongly.
Sam
Dalton [07 Under 14 Vic runner up]– 7.5 points final position 6-9 overall, 2-3
under 16
A tremendous
performance by Sam including beating Chris Wallace
Cedric Antolis [07 rookies cup winner] – 7 points final position 10-16
overall, 3-4 under 14
This is very good performance by Cedric especially bearing in mind that some
of the entrants were several years older.
Eugene Schon – 7 points final position 10-16 overall 3-4, under 14
The same comments apply as to the performance of Cedric. Eugene was clearly
winning against Junta Ikeda, the eventual winner of the tournament, but allowed
him to escape with a draw in a rook and pawn endgame.
Derek Yu – final position 10-16 overall 4-7 under 16
A very good solid performance.
Joshua Dalton 5.5 points - final position 36-48
A sound performance
Micah Dalton 3.5 points -final position overall 74-78
Tried hard
UNDER 18 – GIRLS
This was a 13 round robin which made it a very tough tournament.
Sally Yu- [Under 18 Vic Girls Champ] 11 points - final position 2 Under 16
Girls Champion
Sally came second a half point behind the winner who she beat in her
individual game. Sally played fighting chess throughout the tournament as is
shown by her results – eleven wins two losses and no draws. In my opinion she
should give serious consideration to playing in the open next year
Stephanie
Ang [Under 14 Vic Girls Champ] 4
points overall position 11
Stephanie played
above her rating.
UNDER 12 OPEN
We had a large
number of entrants in this tournament that all acquitted themselves well.
Lawrence Matheson [07 under 12
Vic champ] 9.5 points Under 12 champion
An excellent all round performance by Lawrence.
Yi Liu – 9 points 2nd overall
Yi played
at Box Hill until his family moved to Queensland. The move into banana bender
territory does not appear to have had a negative impact on his chess.
Anurag Sannidhanam - 4-5 overall 1-2 under 10 [lost the title play-off]
Another really good performance
Michael Chan 6-13 overall 3rd under10
A very good performance
Andrew Gurevich [07 under 10 Vic Champ] 6.5 points 14-19 overall
very solid result.
Isaac Ng 6.5 points 14-19 overall
As with Andrew a very solid result.
Joshua Ng 6 points 20-24 overall
A good result. The Ng brothers performed well.
Peter Wallmueller 5.5 points Under 8 champion.
Scoring fifty percent in the tournament and winning the under eight prize is
a tremendous achievement.
Joshua Devarajh. 5 points 33-41 overall
Another player in the under ten category who scored reasonably despite
there being older players in the tournament.
Daniel Yuan. [07 under 8 Vic Champ]. 4.5 points 42-45 overall 2 under 8
Another youngster who performed really well
09 Australian Junior
Last week I wrote Chess Victoria’s ambitious
plans to have the 2009 Australian Junior Championships held in Melbourne at the
Box Hill Chess Club’s Rochester Road venue suffered a serious set back when
the ACF council rejected the submission canning the venue, the administrators
and the submission. Some one queried the meaning of the term to can. Folks it
means to rubbish something or someone and that is what they did. Mind you it
took them almost 6 months to convey their displeasure

2008 Canterbury Summer SWISS.
Bulletin by Trevor Stanning
This was
the second year for this new event for Victoria, catering for chess-players at a
bit of a loose end in the first week of January.
In its
first year, January 2007, the tournament promoter was Geoff Saw from the Dark
Horse Chess Club. For 2008, Geoff passed on the opportunity to run the event and
instead the Canterbury Junior Chess Club responded to many requests to run an
event that prepared juniors for the forthcoming 2008 Australian Juniors in
Sydney. Sponsorship money was also available to attract some strong seniors to
enter the event, and the opportunity to play against Leonid Sandler proved to be
very attractive to seniors who were on holidays over the period.
More than
50 players took advantage of the substantial (25% off) early-bird discount
Many
senior players commented on the pleasantness of the 2-round/day schedule, which
gave them the opportunity to wander around Canterbury’s tree-lined streets and
gardens between rounds. On the other hand this is a bit of a downer for juniors
who finish their games earlier and require some supervision by parents between
the morning round and the afternoon round. The enjoyment of all seemed apparent
over the four days.
A new
feature on board 1 was an electronic-sensing-chess-board, called a DGT board,
which automatically tracked moves and fed the signal from the board to computers
in a viewing area and outwards to the Internet web site for the Club. This
feature proved to be good publicity as I was advised by players from other Clubs
that they followed (remote from the playing Hall) the progress of board 1 games
throughout our tournament.
My many
thanks go to Shaun Fielder for extensive work he carried out to set-up the
computer facilities. I believe we can quickly activate this facility for all
future major events at the Club.
And so to
the games, in round 1 the major surprise result was Laurence Matheson’s win
over Cedric Antolis. In round 2
Peter Frost ceded 610 rating points to the top seed, but achieved a draw; this
may be Peter’s finest result. As it was a board 1 game the moves were
displayed in real-time to the viewing lounge, and to the Internet. Leonid
Sandler’s loss of a half-point elevated Sam Dalton and Douglas Lindberg to the
top board and at the end of round 3 Douglas was the sole player on 3/3. This
earned Douglas a pairing against Leonid Sandler, which looked like being the
most significant pairing of the tournament; Leonid won the full point. After 4
rounds Sam Dalton, the 9th
seed, was on 2/2 and you
could have got long odds on him featuring at the prize giving. Jason Tang had a
nice upset win against Eugene Schon, and Rhys Hopkins did similar against Cedric
Antolis. In round 5 Thomas Feng had a good win against Timothy Trott, but most
games went according to ratings.
So to
round 6, we had two players on 4.5/6 and paired on board 1; all eyes in the
viewing lounge watched with disbelief as Wallis moved both knights twice in the
first 6 moves, and Sandler played N(g1)-f3, N(f3)-g1, N(g1)-f3 in the first 6
moves; the ultimate cat and mouse. Just as an extremely complex position
developed a series of exchanges reduced the game to a dull bishops ending. There
were parallels to Melbourne weather with a storm build-up; a quick front moves
through, and then benign conditions after the change. 1/2
- 1/2 was the outcome. Sam Dalton could have been paired in this round
against seeds 3, 4, or 19; the computer was kind and arranged 19 as Sam’s
opponent. Sam duly won the game against Zeljko Podvorac and is the way of
pairings rules that matched Sam against Leonid Sandler in the final round.
Surely too hard a task for Sam.
Sam Dalton
v Leonid Sandler was the game piped into the viewing lounge and out to the
Internet, via the DGT board. It proved to be an intensely competitive offering.
Sam came out of the opening better, then totally squandered the advantage and
then suddenly had it won again. I will get David Flude to annotate this game and
present on our web site in the next week. Two locals were overall winners on
6/7; Chris Wallis and Sam Dalton. Full winners list for each division are
available at http://www.boxhillchess.org.au/e2008/e0801cso/standings.htm
The prize
giving was a social affair and it is clear this January event fills a need in
the chess calendar. Congratulations to our captain Gerrit Hartland on a
successful event, and thanks to Roger Croft who attended early each day to help
with the equipment set-up.

Australian Champion
I had a call this morning from
Frank Solomon the proud father of Stephen Solomon the newly crowned 2008
Australian Champion. Frank rang to remind me that Stephen started his chess
career at the Box Hill Chess Club as a small boy in the sixties. What spurred
him on to become a chess player was the gift of a chess book from the club
library by the then secretary John Illingworth a book which Stephen apparently
still has. Frank’s call started me thinking about the achievements of the many
young players we have had at the club since it was formed in 1952. Although
Stephen is the only Australian Champion who got his start at BHCC, there are a
few Australian Junior champions who got going at the club.

Stephen’s

stalwart member Arthur Cottingham whom he beat in 9 moves. Arthur who was the
most generous of losers was very proud of the game [!] and showed it to us many
