News & Weekly Bulletins - March 2008

Issue 2008.13– March 26

April 13 Rookies and Queens Cup.

There was a very good turn out of 56 for our March tournament and we hope for an even better roll-up in April. As both Trevor and I will be away for this one It will be an interesting day for the A team

2008 Autumn Cup round 5 completed
The tournament that starts in summer but finishes in autumn

The draw for round 6 has been thrown into chaos by the continuing absence of some of our top players [and some of our lesser lights] at the Sydney SIO. Unfortunately not everyone told the arbiter of their need for a postponement of those who did Francisco Chung, Bobby Cheng, Eugene Schon, and Michael Chan had the opportunity to have postponements arranged. Others will be given a ½ point bye. Latest draw is now on the web site with a different top board web site: http://www.boxhillchess.org.au

08 Victorian Junior Championships

Under 18 tournament 9 rounds from June 30 to July 3

 Tuesday New season Swiss

There were big absences in the Tuesday tournament as well Some of our juniors do not seem to realise that tournaments do continue during school holidays and it remains necessary to inform the arbiter in case of unavailability Good for Laurence Matheson Murphy Guo, Joseph Wong, Kit Ming Foo Adam Hayman and newcomer Michael Tanner Murphy, Joseph, and Adam being rewarded with good wins. 08 BHCC Club championship

The Championship for the Box Hill Chess Club is due to start on the 24th of April. It will be necessary for members to renew their annual subscription to the Club so as to be eligible for our premier event.

The recent AGM left the subscription rates at $75 FULL, and $60 CONCESSION.

The Championship has a proud history starting in 1952 with a win to Brian Robson. Greg Frean won it 5 times in a row in the 1970’s.  It was a 6-way tie in 1991, requiring a playoff that saw Rod Macfarlan emerge as the successful champion. The oldest player to win our championship is John Kable, who is our Public Officer for lodging returns with the Corporate Affairs Office.

So, who will be our 57th winner?

In 56 years most wins have been by a seniors, but juniors have won 3 in the past 5 years.

The Club Administrators would appreciate early entries to the Championship, accompanied by renewal of annual subscriptions for Club membership. Pick-up a flyer over the next week or two and update your contact details. Details of this and other upcoming tournaments are also available on the website with web entry forms

http://boxhillchess.org.au/

Important notice

Due to its sponsorship of this tournament Canterbury Junior chess Club has negotiated entries for its members into this tournament without paying BHCC membership. Full entry fees apply however

Issue 2008.12– March 18

March Queens and Rookies Cup on March 16.

The Rookies Cup held once a month is a reminder how much fun chess can be. It is great thrill to watch a youngster win his first game or two at the Club and hurry to his waiting parents with the story of how “this was a good move’, and “ I had him beaten from the start”. There are plenty of chances for everyone to win a game or two in this 7-round-event held between 12.30 and 5pm. You don’t have to be a trophy winner to count it as a successful afternoon of fun.

A few strong adults are regulars for the adult cash prize and this is welcomed as it gives an opportunity for the more experienced youngsters to test themselves out against really good players. The trophies are sponsored by George Zaprudsky’s coaching business called ZedChess.

As round 1 started there were a few glitches of players left without an opponent, and players left out of the pairings. We work hard to avoid these problems and must be close to having a clean start one day.

The canteen did solid business all day and sincere thanks go to Antoinette Ziffer and Christine Qin for their hard work.

Just prior to the trophy ceremony our Captain, Gerry Hartland took the opportunity to present a few annual Box Hill awards

Ø      Justin Tan received the ‘most-improved’ junior award for his startling increase in rating in 2007. It was a jump in rating that may never be seen again by any player; certainly the largest we have ever seen.

Ø      Leon Kempen received the ‘most-improved’  award for his improvement in rating in 2007. In recent years this award has been the preserve of rapidly improving experienced juniors such as Eugene Schon, Zhigen Wilson Lin, and Chris Wallis. For Leon to improve his rating in this climate of points-claiming juniors is very commendable.

Ø      Toni Ziffer received the best Clubman award for her efforts in encouraging attendance at Rookies events, and her managing of the Canteen in 2007.

The Rookies trophy this month was won by Cedric Antolis. Six tied for 2nd place. John WP Wong won on scrutinised count-back from Justin Tan, Anurag Sannidhanam, Nicholas Liu, Bryan Ng, and Kyle Gibson(Kyle was in J2, and to feature in J1 prizes is his PB).

Kyle won J2 outright with Daniel Yuan a clear 2nd.

Newcomer Gene Lai won J3. 2nd place required a count-back where Reuban Nowak collected the trophy closely from Sean Lin, PeterWallmueller, and Robin Zhou.

Zachary Loh won J4 and Joseph Wong just edged Lachlan Scott for 2nd on count-back.

J5 had three equal firsts. Enoch Fan, Almog Leyzerman, and Euan Reid.

The Queens trophy was shared by Vivienca Luong and Charlotte Dilnutt.

Carl Gorka won the $30 adults cash prize and Leon Kempen, Joerg Wallmueller and David Flude shared 2nd.

Congratulations to all winners and players, and thanks to all helpers.

Someone left a Swiss type army knife behind

Tuesday New season Swiss

Club closed nights: March 11

The round 4 broadcast game between Bergmanis and Flude provided us with an early draw. This was not due to a lack of fighting spirit. The player's reached a position where they both had to repeat moves or suffer a serious disadvantage. Adam Hayman gave his opponent an easy win by allowing his mobile to go off. How can this be I tell them every week TURN YOUR MOBILE OFF!  Are we listening out there it applies to all tournaments at all levels. It is the rule. The outcome of the Yuan, Chan game is uncertain, as there was no result and a very scratchy scoresheet

What gave me a BUZZ this week around the Chess Club.

Written by Trevor Stanning

First.

The Club hosted the playoff for the 2007 Victorian Championship. Last November Mirko Rujevic and Igor Goldenberg tied for first in the Championship proper. A four game play-off was arranged for the past two week-ends with games played at the rate of 90 minutes each and a 30 second increment. We were able to display the games live to the world via the internet by using our new digitised board and clock. [Our Friday and Tuesday board 1 local Club games are also displayed live as they occur. Tune in via the prominent link on our revamped home_page. Or visit the games_archive also displayed on our home_page.]

After 16 hours of hard games, the two honourable gentlemen were locked at 2-2 and declared joint holders of the Victorian title. Congratulations to Mirko and Igor.

Second.

Four of the mums sitting around on the side-lines of the Sunday 2-3.30pm novice coaching class decided that they would like to learn chess. So a starters class was formed with Sophie, Lydia, Carol, May, and 5yo Stephanie using a quiet corner of the building to learn how the pieces move, how to win quickly, and how to have fun.

It was a very pleasant session and we will move on to some more lessons after the term break.

Third

Olgerts (Bob) Bergmanis has been a regular at our Tuesday 7.45pm tournaments. In recent years he has been prone to offering a quick draw and we wondered if the competitive spirit of this 80+ gentleman had dimmed a little. However, two fine wins over Victor Kildisas and Shane Lawson show a rejuvenated veteran. Well done Bob; your games are installed in our games archive on the web-site as they were board 1 games.
