A Summer Chess Tradition

Held annually between Christmas and New Year, the Canterbury Summer Swiss is one of Box Hill Chess Club’s major annual tournaments.

Played over four days from 27–30 December, our tournament attracts a strong and diverse field of juniors and adults, including titled players and competitors travelling from interstate and overseas.

With fields now regularly exceeding 100 players, the Canterbury Summer Swiss has become a popular fixture on the Australian summer chess calendar.

Its History

We have been running the Canterbury Summer Swiss for many years, with confirmed records dating back to at least 2009. That year’s tournament included future Australian Champion Max Illingworth and IM James Morris.

By 2010, the tournament was already attracting a substantial field of 68 players, and over the years we have welcomed many leading Australian and international players. The 2014 Canterbury Summer Swiss, for example, featured Bobby Cheng, then an International Master and now a Grandmaster, alongside visiting Russian GM Vasily Papin.

The tournament has occasionally made way for other major events hosted during the same summer period. After a one-year absence for the Australian Open, the Canterbury Summer Swiss returned in 2019, when we held the tournament at the Herzl Club in Caulfield.

A Growing Tournament

The Canterbury Summer Swiss has traditionally been held at venues outside our regular club premises, allowing us to bring together a larger cross-section of the chess community.

In recent years, Huntingdale Golf Club has provided the setting for the tournament. The 2025 edition attracted more than 100 players, continuing the tournament’s tradition of drawing a large and diverse field.

These larger venues allow us to welcome players from across Australia and overseas while maintaining the atmosphere that has made the Canterbury Summer Swiss a highlight of our tournament calendar.

Between Christmas & New Year

The timing of the Canterbury Summer Swiss is part of its tradition. Each year, we bring the chess community together during the final days of December, when many players are travelling for Australia’s summer tournament season.

From ambitious juniors to experienced club players, international masters and grandmasters, the Canterbury Summer Swiss offers four days of competitive classical chess and a fitting way for us to bring another year of chess to a close.
